Replace Your Ipod Mini Battery

You can go either of two ways to replace your Ipod battery: have Apple replace your battery for you for $99 or you can do it yourself for $29. Not one being afraid of a little diy repair, I signed up to replace it myself. I got the replacement battery through Laptops for Less for $29 that included a screwdriver and directions.
Here’s how to replace the battery in your Ipod Mini:
1. It is suggested that you use the flat tip of a screwdriver to pry the white plastic cover from the top of the Ipod. The cover is attached to the Ipod with some glue. Other people have suggested to use a hard piece of plastic so you won’t scratch your case or the cover of the Ipod and I agree with this after using the screwdriver. A tack is also useful to go around the outside of the cover to get rid of some of the glue. This was the hardest part to get it started but rest assured you can get it off.

Here’s what it looks like once you have the top cover off:

Here’s what the cover looks like. You can tell where the screwdriver was used to pry off the cover.

2. Once you have the top cover off, use a screwdriver to remove the two screws. The screwdriver sent with my replacement battery had too big of a tip I found, so I used a smaller one. (the green one)

3. Once again, use the flat tip of the screwdriver (or hard plastic) to remove the bottom cover to the Ipod. I found the bottom to have significantly more glue than the top.

4. Now you need to remove the metal clip. You can do this by prying each end up until it pops off.

5. Next you need to disconnect the motherboard from the Ipod. The connector pulls out toward you.

6. Push from the bottom and slide the motherboard out through the top of the Ipod case.

7. Now remove the battery from the motherboard (it may be held there by glue or tape) so you can disconnect the battery. You may need to use the flat edge of the screwdriver to pop the connector off.

8. Plug the new battery into the Ipod. Make sure your connector is plugged in the correct way. It may help to write down where the red and black wire goes on the connector. Even though the connector only fits one way, sometimes people can “force” it to fit. Below is a picture of the old battery and replacement battery.

9. Place the new battery into the original position on the motherboard. Now comes the tricky part: sliding the motherboard back into the Ipod case. Be careful not to catch the wires on the new battery on the outside of the case or else you will tear the wires. Also the motherboard may hit on the inside of the Ipod case so it may take some wiggling and curse words to get it back in there. Trust me, it will fit back in there.

10. Put the bracket back on, put the screws in and put the covers back on and you are done!
For people not use to dealing with electronic boards and components, replacing your battery can be a little heart pounding at first. But if you take your time and keep your cool, you can easily get it done in about 20 minutes and have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.

Apple offers a $59 battery replacement program at the genius bar of any apple store. They actually replace your entire iPod with a new/refurbished one of the same model. So if your iPod is scratched to hell and you want a fresh looking one, you may want to spend the extra $30.

In the UK, you can get the battery for £20 from Maplin - part number L62BL

It's much easier to do if you first heat up the glue with a hairdryer set to medium.
That way you don't damage the top casing as much and the top will come off a lot easier.
(This is also the way battery replacement specialsts recommend you do it)

Well, Apple only charges $59, and they replace your whole ipod if its in a retail store. . . so, you saved $30, which basically equals a shinny reconditioned unit w/o screw driver damage, and after market battery, and other misc scratches to the case and screen. *shrug* cheers though!

Hey guys, I have a tip. For prying off the white top and bottom covers, I used a plastic Light guitar pick. These work like a charm and won't ravage the body like the metal flat-heads.

This is awesome information! I just did it and it was easy. A couple things to add: You can buy the replacement battery from la_tronics on eBay for $6.99! In the auction I won, they didn't even charge shipping! Included, free, were plastic tools to pry off the ends of the iPod and disconnect the motherboard. They caused NO damage (unlike the screwdrivers and other items I've heard are being used). Also, instead of prying out the clip on the bottom end, under the plastic cover (#4), I recommend gently prying loose the little curved arms of the clip with the tiny holes in the ends. There's a tool for these types of clips, but I can't remember what it's called! A good hardware store could probably tell you and sell you one for under $10.

Beware of step #5! It's not incorrect, but it's tricker than the instructions let on. The plug that connect the motherboard is almost indistinguishable from the female receiving port. If you position a screwdriver under the receiving port (and we're talking a VERY tiny thing in a VERY small place), you will pop off the receiving port, and then you're screwed. As I am -- the buttons no longer work. Next time, I would get some very small needle-nosed pliers to grasp and pull the motherboard plug.

Fantastic, 20 minutes start to finish (most of which spent trying to get the metal clip back in). Many thanks.
BTW, my replacement battery cost £5 off ebay, including postage. How come it's better quality than Apple's? Shocking.

Just finished! Hopefully all works like a charm. The toughest part for me was getting the metal prong/clasp part back in. Other than that, pretty easy going. Thanks!

I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? laptop battery
Verizon is about the only place you can get the authentic RIM product and matching door. Most other sites are out of stock and even when they are in stock they have the black battery door which looks like crap. new battery
